In the north-western part of the Altmühltal Nature Park lies the large recreational area Franconian Lake District with the lakes Grosser and Kleiner Brombachsee, Altmühlsee with the bird protection island, Igelsbachsee and Rothsee. These lakes were created in the course of the construction of the Main-Danube Canal and serve as a water balance storage for the water-poor Franconian north.
The tourist use of this lake country is for Franconia and for the entire nature park Altmühltal a great enrichment and also for you as a guest. A wide range of recreational opportunities awaits you here: sailing, swimming, sailing, surfing, hiking and cycling, and much more.
The Franconian Lake District can also boast many cultural assets and historic buildings from the past. The Limes, UNESCO World Heritage, runs across the Franconian Lake District and is still clearly visible today. Stately castles, magnificent castles and associated gardens, venerable churches and monasteries, historic towns with their fortifications and ancient monuments testify to a long cultural history.
