Eichstätt

The baroque town Eichstätt in the center of the nature park Altmühltal invites to a city stroll through its old town. Significant master builders such as Gabriel de Gabrieli and Maurizio Pedetti gave this baroque dress on behalf of the former prince-bishops of Eichstätt.

The Eichstätt Residenzplatz, flanked by a playful fountain and the Mariensäule, is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Witness to this architecture is also the splendid Hall of Mirrors and the staircase of the residence, the former monastery church Notre Dame de Sacre Coeur and the monastery church of St. Walburg - just to name a few buildings. In addition, modern architecture, created by the diocesan master builder Karljosef Schattner or the star architect Günther Behnisch, also plays an important role.

Eichstätt, a centuries-old episcopal city and the seat of the Catholic University, is characterized by magnificent monasteries and richly decorated churches.

The Willibaldsburg with the Jurassic Museum, the Museum of Prehistory and the Botanical Garden Hortus Eystettensis is the landmark of Eichstätt. Powerful and strong, the castle rises on a mountain tongue and towers over the town of Eichstätt and the Altmühltal. From here you have a wonderful view of the city and the valley. A visit to the Jurassic Museum with living fossils, the well-known Archäopteryx and Juravenator with subsequent visit of the fossil quarry is particularly popular with children.
